Interested in NME, Q and MOJO magazines? Read on to see how this man has possibly influenced your life!
Students at University College Falmouth were told today that
launching magazines should not involve a huge amount of money, Instead work
from the bottom and the launch will be much more successful.
Paul Du Noyer a successful Journalist who has help start up
several high quality magazines including the popular music magazine ‘Q’ and
well known celebrity gossip magazine ‘Heat’. Noyer told students that when
magazines are launched with a small budget and a small publishing house the
magazine should develop slowly into a quality magazine.
Paul Du Noyer told Students: “With ‘Q’ the publishers were
wiser, “Build it up slowly with word of mouth” and that’s how Q launched it
took about 2 years”.
Although Noyer wasn’t initially trained to become a
Journalist his work experience at NME a very popular music magazine enabled him
to progress into bigger things even becoming editor of several magazines.
However if students think that becoming editor means less
field reporting and spending much of the time in the office rather than out
finding stories then they are mistaken.
Noyer said that: “With all the tensions which come with
being the editor, I took 2 weeks off to follow [U2] round to get the
circulation figures up. Sometimes the editor feels that something is so
important that he doesn’t trust anybody but himself to get the story”.
Finally Noyer stresses to Falmouth University students that
there writing and getting it printed is so important if they want to succeed
and have a really good, long career in Journalism. “Having a couple of books in
your CV improves its look” Noyer told students. He himself has written three
books in order to improve his writing skills and to offer a view on the career
he is currently in.
